MINOT – A new non-profit organization to benefit the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning community here has officially launched, as of today.
The organization, Magic City Equality, will take on the role previously held by the Pride Minot organization since its inception in 2013, sharing the purpose of educating the public, as well as individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) in northwestern North Dakota about LGBTQ culture, current events, and community concerns.
“We are excited to begin a new chapter in Minot, helping to promote equality for all, despite any gender, sexual, or relationship diversities a person may have,” said James Falcon, President of Magic City Equality. In addition to Falcon, the board also includes Christopher Dix, Vice President; Shannon Krueger, Secretary; Jorden Laducer, Treasurer; Rochelle Young, Member at Large (Military Ambassador); and River Avalon, Member at Large (Youth/Volunteer Coordinator). The board got their start as the final board running the now-defunct Pride Minot.
“In our efforts to obtain non-profit status, we ran into a bit of a hiccup,” Dix stated. “The name was determined to be deceptively similar to another non-profit registered in North Dakota, so we had to brainstorm.” The board eventually landed on Magic City Equality and was granted the approval they were seeking.
Magic City Equality will take over the responsibility of the Minot Pride Festival, which will be held June 27-30, 2019, in Minot, as well as other endeavors that Pride Minot did before to help instill pride, celebrate the history and accomplishments of LGBTQ individuals, and embrace diversity in the northwestern North Dakota region. Magic City Equality will also add new programs and ideas to help further the mission of the organization.
Magic City Equality has partnered with the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition (NDHRC), who will serve as a fiscal sponsor for the non-profit. Through this, donations to Magic City Equality can be tax-deductible.
